Feast of Crispian at the County Community Reintegration Center
In early September 2023, Feast began delivering programming for inmates inside County Community Reintegration Center (CRC, colloquially pronounced “crick”) in Franklin, WI. Waiting to be sentenced or serving sentences of less than one year, these folks join FoC to develop deeper self-understanding, practice emotional regulation, and experience the listening and learning that makes acting Shakespeare a powerful empathetic relationship builder. Whether because of trauma, lack of emotional education, or having been caught in a system that is usually more about punishing a wrong than breaking a harmful cycle, the men and women serving time at the CRC come to class with FoC to gather tools to start fresh upon release, and to find some joy that helps free their minds even while their bodies are incarcerated. Most of our participants tell us they want to learn all they can to be the best parents they can be, to help their children successfully live in and contribute to their communities.
Every week, FoC goes behind the bars of the jail and brings Shakespeare along, with scenes, discussion of themes, active play with theater games, and emotional regulation exercises. Sitting on the restorative circle with FoC facilitators, they share their challenges and realizations. Sharing honest feelings, supporting each other, and practicing deep listening they discover their self-worth and acknowledge the worth in others.
At the invitation of, and the enthusiastic support of the CRC administration, we are enjoying playing with Shakespeare among people eager to learn.
